Francesca Curmi of Malta moved into the last 16 of the Grand Est Open 88, the WTA 125 event on the outdoor clay of Contrexéville, France, with a 6-4, 6-3 win over French wild card Oceane Dodin on Monday evening.

Curmi remains a trailblazer for Maltese tennis: in 2023 she became the first player from Malta ever to reach a WTA Tour main draw, qualifying in Palermo. The world No 268 will next play Switzerland’s Rebeka Masarova.
