Arthur Fils qualifies for the Nitto ATP Finals, first Frenchman since Monfils in 2016
Quentin Halys’s 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (9) win over Frances Tiafoe in Paris on Wednesday guarantees Arthur Fils a place at the Nitto ATP Finals, a first for a French player since Gael Monfils in 2016.

Arthur Fils qualified for the Nitto ATP Finals (Nov. 15-22) on Wednesday, when fellow Frenchman Quentin Halys beat seventh seed Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (9) in the second round of the Rolex Paris Masters. Fils is the first French player to qualify for the season finale since Gael Monfils in 2016.
Tiafoe’s defeat leaves him on 3,390 points, and Rafael Jodar, beaten by Casper Ruud on Tuesday, is stuck on 3,234. Neither can catch Fils, who is seventh in the race on 3,535.
Why no more than two players can pass Fils
Fils would only miss Turin if three players overtook him. Alex de Minaur would need the semi-finals and Novak Djokovic the final, but they are in the same section of the draw, so only one of them can go that far.
Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz would need the title, and only one of them can win it. That makes two at most, which leaves Fils no lower than ninth, the last place in with Jannik Sinner out for the season.
He joins Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton, Daniil Medvedev and Flavio Cobolli, who qualified on Tuesday without playing. Two places are left.
