ATP rankings – Tsitsipas leapfrogs Nadal ahead of Roland-Garros

Monday’s ATP rankings have larger implications, as they determine the seeds at Roland-Garros, which begins on Sunday May 22 (the draw will be held Thursday May 19). With that in mind let’s have a look at this week’s risers and fallers.

Key moves for Tsitsipas, Ruud

Key moves were made in this week’s ATP rankings, as Stefanos Tsitsipas jumped past Rafael Nadal, rising to No 4, and Casper Ruud vaulted two spots, climbing to No 8. The jumps are significant because they ensure a top 4 seed for Tsitsipas at Roland-Garros and a top 8 seed for Ruud.

With Rafael Nadal dropping to No 5 in this week’s rankings, things could get complicated at Roland-Garros. As the No 5 seed in Paris, Nadal could face Djokovic or any other top 4 seed as soon as the quarter-finals.

With Carlos Alcaraz ranked and seeded sixth ahead of Roland-Garros, some exciting quarter-final matchups could be in the works.

In Ruud’s case, by procuring the No 8 ranking and the No 8 seed, the Norwegian is ensured that he will not face a top 8 seed prior to the quarter-finals at Paris. Had he been ranked or seeded nine or lower, he could have ended up facing Nadal or Alcaraz in the round of 16.

Djokovic – top of the table, and closing in on more history

Novak Djokovic was in danger of losing the No 1 ranking to Daniil Medvedev this week in Rome, but the Serb took care of business and will begin Roland-Garros as the world No 1 and the top seed. Djokovic begins his 370th week at the top of the ATP rankings – he is now just seven weeks shy of the all-time record for weeks at No 1, held by Steffi Graf at 377 weeks.

Djokovic can tie and pass Graf’s record if he holds the top ranking into Wimbledon.

New career-highs: Van de Zandschulp, Brooksby Rune

There are a total of 11 new career-high rankings inside the ATP’s top-100, led by Botic Van de Zandschulp’s top 100 debut.
