Qualifier Luca Nardi moved into the second round of the Auckland Open when No 6 seed Flavio Cobolli retired on Tuesday at the ASB Tennis Arena.
Nardi, ranked No 90, led 6-2, 1-1 when Cobolli, ranked No 32, pulled out.
Luca Nardi will face Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs next.
