Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, defeated Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 5 seed, 7-5, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open at Real Club de Tenis Barcelona on Friday.

Alcaraz, ranked No 2, will play the winner of the match between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 3 seed, and Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 7 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the 21-year-old Spaniard won against American qualifier Ethan Quinn (6-2, 7-6 (6)) and Serb qualifier Laslo Djere (6-2, 6-4).

De Minaur, ranked No 7, beat Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (6-4, 6-4) and lucky loser Jacob Fearnley (6-1, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
