Stefanos Tsitsipas set up a high-stakes second-round clash against Daniil Medvedev at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open by defeating Tunisian wild card Moez Echargui 6-4, 6-4 in the final match of Day 2.
The 27-year-old Greek, currently ranked world No 33, handled the pressure of the night session at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex with efficiency. Facing the world No 139, Tsitsipas maintained a high level of focus to ensure he avoided the early exits that have recently plagued his hard-court campaign.
The second seed did not face a single break point throughout the 82-minute contest, mirroring the serving dominance shown by Medvedev earlier in the evening. Tsitsipas broke Echargui’s serve once in each set, timing his surges perfectly to close out the Tuesday schedule and secure his passage into the last 16.
10-4 for Medvedev so far
This victory officializes the most anticipated matchup of the tournament so far. Tsitsipas will now face world No 11 Daniil Medvedev for the 15th time in their professional careers. The rivalry has been historically dominated by the Russian, who holds a 10-4 lead in their head-to-head record and has claimed victory in their last three encounters, most recently a straight-sets win in Shanghai.
The two have shared a storied and often tense history on the ATP Tour, dating back to their first meeting in Miami eight years ago.
