American Tommy Paul, the No 14 seed, defeated Serb Miomir Kecmanovic 7-5, 7-6 (2) to reach the second round of the Cincinnati Masters at the Linder Tennis Family Center.
Paul, ranked No 13, will face the winner of the match between Ugo Humbert and qualifier Arthur Fils next.
