Purcell’s Cincinnati run continues with third-round victory over Wawrinka

Australian qualifier Max Purcell beat Swiss wild card Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-2 to move into the quarter-finals of the Western & Southern Open on Thursday afternoon.
Purcell, ranked No 70, will play the winner of the match between top seed Carlos Alcaraz and No 14 seed Tommy Paul.
Earlier in the tournament, Purcell defeated South African Lloyd Harris (6-4, 6-4) and edged out Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 5 seed (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).
Wawrinka, ranked No 51, beat American wild card Brandon Nakashima (6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3) and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 10 seed (6-3, 6-4), to reach the third round in Cincinnati.
