Stan Wawrinka awarded US Open wild card at the last minute!
Stan Wawrinka has been handed a US Open wild card after Patrick Kypson’s injury withdrawal, reversing a decision that had denied the 2016 champion a place in what is set to be his farewell appearance in New York.

After all! Three-time Grand Slam champion and 2016 US Open winner Stan Wawrinka has been awarded a men’s singles main-draw wild card into the 2026 US Open, the tournament confirmed, after American Patrick Kypson withdrew from his own wild-card spot with an injury.
“I’m incredibly excited to accept the wild card for the 2026 US Open and look forward to competing in front of the fans in New York once again,” Wawrinka said.
The wild card ends a tense and public wait for the 41-year-old Swiss. Earlier this week, Wawrinka had missed out on the tournament’s last remaining wild card, which instead went to a player ranked outside the top 100, prompting Wawrinka himself to confirm his request had been denied.
The decision drew criticism at the time given that Gael Monfils, also playing his farewell season, had already been handed a reciprocal wild card through the French Tennis Federation. Kypson’s withdrawal reopened the door Wawrinka appeared to have missed.
Wawrinka, currently ranked outside the top 120, is playing the final season of his career before retirement. His 2016 US Open title, won with a final victory over Novak Djokovic, remains his finest Grand Slam run, and the tournament is his best major by win-loss record. He has not won a match at Flushing Meadows since 2023, and this wild card is expected to give him one last appearance at the event where he lifted his third and final major.
