Dane Holger Rune, the No 7 seed, reached his tenth quarterfinal at the Masters 1000 level, at the Cincinnati Masters when American Frances Tiafoe, the No 10 seed, retired on Wednesday evening.

Rune, ranked No 9, led 6-4, 3-1 when Tiafoe, ranked No 14, pulled out for what looks like a back or hip injury. Tiafoe asked for a medical time out at 5-4 in the first and was never the same after, in terms of speed and focus.

The 22-year-old Dane will play the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the No 4 seed, and French qualifier Terence Atmane next.

The American, who was a runner-up last year, defeating Rune on the way, won against Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 20 seed (6-4, 6-4) and Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (6-4, 6-3) in the previous rounds. He will be out of the Top 15 at the next ATP rankings.
