German Alexander Zverev, the No 16 seed, won against Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the last 16 of the Cincinnati Masters at the Linder Tennis Family Center on Wednesday evening.
Zverev, ranked No 17, will face Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, next. It will be their fourth meeting of the year, with the Russian having won them all so far.
In the previous round of the Cincy Open, the German defeated Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (6-2, 6-2).
Nishioka, ranked No 45, beat Frenchman Gregoire Barrere (6-4, 7-5) during the first round of the Cincy Open.
