Citi Open: Khachanov battles past Koepfer to reach last 16

Karen Khachanov edged out Dominik Koepfer 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4 on Tuesday night and will face the winner of the match between Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 11 seed, and Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka in the next round

Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 7 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Citi Open by edging out German qualifier Dominik Koepfer 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4 at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington on Tuesday night.

The Russian needed two hours and 45 minutes for the hard-fought win in which he was able to convert five of 17 break point chances. On the other hand, Koepfer was able to win three of the five break points he earned.

Khachanov, ranked No 24, will face the winner of the match between Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 11 seed, and Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka next.
