Chinese qualifier Juncheng Shang won against American Ben Shelton, the No 14 seed, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the last 16 of the Citi Open at Rock Creek Park Tennis Center in Washington on Tuesday evening.

Shang, ranked No 149, will play the winner of the match between Russian Aslan Karatsev and American Frances Tiafoe, the second seed, next.

Shelton can perhaps take a little solace that he did better against Shang than he managed in their first encounter, in Atlanta last week, when he lost in straight sets.

The 18-year-old Chinese beat Ecuadorian Emilio Gomez (6-3, 6-3) in the previous round of the Washington D.C. tournament.
