American Frances Tiafoe, the No 6 seed, moved into the last 8 of the Citi Open by winning against Italian Flavio Cobolli, the No 9 seed, 6-1, 6-4 at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Washington on Thursday night.
Tiafoe, ranked No 11, will play American Ben Shelton, the No 4 seed, next.
The American defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic (7-5, 3-6, 6-3) ahead of his victory.
In the previous round of the Washington D.C. tournament, Cobolli, ranked No 18, beat Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka (6-2, 7-6 (3)).
