Croatia Open: Daniel beats US Open junior champ Landaluce in three sets

The Japanese will play No 4 seed Roberto Carballes Baena in the next round

Japan’s Taro Daniel won against Spanish wildcard Martin Landaluce 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 to move into the second round of the Croatia Open at the ITC Stella Maris in Umag on Monday.

Landaluce won the boys singles title at the US Open last September and the 17-year-old topped the ITF world junior rankings for the first time in February this year.

Daniel, ranked No 113, will play No 4 seed Roberto Carballes Baena next.

After the match, Daniel posted a tweet in which he said he needed a tough win like this. “Umag ATP made it through to the second round. The opponent was a junior player who was the world’s top player, and it was a tough match. We needed a win like this, so I’m glad we made it through. I will do my best next time! The game ended at 11:00 p.m. due to rain interruptions. can’t sleep”
