In a battle of grit and baseline persistence, second seed Luciano Darderi overcame German Yannick Hanfmann 7-6(6), 7-5 to reign supreme in Santiago. The victory marks Darderi’s fifth career ATP title, all of which have remarkably come on his beloved clay courts.

With this triumph, Darderi separates himself from the elite pack; since the beginning of 2024, his five titles on the surface now surpass Carlos Alcaraz (4) and Sebastian Baez (3), not mentioning the category of the competition.

Darderi’s path to the Chile Open trophy was a masterclass in navigating a treacherous draw. Currently ranked No. 21, the Italian navigated grueling three-set battles against Andrea Pellegrino and Mariano Navone before delivering a statement 6-4, 6-3 win over third seed Sebastian Baez in the semi-finals.

His efficiency on the dirt is now reaching historic proportions: Darderi has amassed a staggering 16-2 record on clay since last July. Furthermore, since 2020, only four titans of the sport – Casper Ruud, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Sebastian Baez – have captured more ATP-level events on this surface.

Since winning Cordoba in 2024, he has been Umag, Bastad and Marrakech champion.

Hanfmann, the world No. 81, had enjoyed a “giant-killer” week, dismissing top seed Francisco Cerundolo and fourth seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli without dropping a set. However, in the high-pressure moments of the opening-set tiebreak and the late stages of the second set, it was Darderi’s explosive movement and heavy topspin that forced the decisive errors.

As the tour prepares for the upcoming European spring, Darderi leaves South America as one of the undisputed men to beat on the dirt.
