First match since the Roland-Garros final ends in defeat for Cobolli as Tiafoe strikes in Halle
A first tournament since the Roland-Garros final, and another early exit: Frances Tiafoe beat Flavio Cobolli (No 6) 6-2, 7-6 (4) in Halle, the Italian’s third successive first-round loss as he adjusts to life in the top 10.

American Frances Tiafoe handed Italian sixth seed Flavio Cobolli a chastening start to his grass-court season on Monday evening, beating the Roland-Garros finalist 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the first round of the Terra Wortmann Open to reach the last 16.
Tiafoe, ranked No 26, was the sharper player throughout, taking the opening set comfortably and holding his nerve in a second-set tie-break to close out the win in straight sets. Cobolli, playing his first tournament since losing the French Open final in Paris, became the first top-10 player to fall in Halle this week.
The defeat extended a difficult run for the Italian as he adjusts to life inside the game’s elite. Having reached a maiden Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros, Cobolli has since gone out in the opening round in back-to-back events, beaten by Ignacio Buse in Hamburg before this loss to Tiafoe.
The switch to grass offered little respite, and the result, while not without precedent on a surface that can unsettle the seedings, underlined how unforgiving the step up has been.
Tiafoe will next face the winner of the match between Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor and Japanese Sho Shimabukuro for a place in the quarter-finals.
