Baez defeated local favourite Thiem in straight sets to win his third career singles title
Argentinian Sebastian Baez defeated Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-1 to win the Generali Open title at Kitzbühel Tennis Club in Kitzbuhel on Saturday afternoon.
Baez, ranked No 72, beat Serb qualifier Hamad Medjedovic (6-4, 6-2), Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena, the No 6 seed (6-1, 6-2), Slovak Alex Molcan (6-4, 6-3) and top seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry (7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
In the previous rounds of the Kitzbuhel tournament, Thiem, ranked No 116, defeated Argentinian qualifier Facundo Bagnis (7-6 (3), 7-6 (6)), Chinese Zhizhen Zhang (1-6, 6-3, 6-2), Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) and Serb Laslo Djere, the No 5 seed (6-7 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (8)).
