Portuguese Nuno Borges, the No 8 seed, won against Croat Marin Cilic 7-5, 6-3 to move into the last eight of the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open on Wednesday night.
Borges, ranked No 45, will face the winner of the match between Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 3 seed, and Chinese wildcard Yibing Wu next.
The Portuguese defeated Bosnian Damir Dzumhur (6-4, 6-3) ahead of his victory. In the previous round, Cilic, ranked No 70, beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino (6-3, 6-2).
