Italian Matteo Arnaldi edged out American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to advance to the second round of BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Thursday.
Arnaldi, ranked No 35, will play No 7 seed Andrey Rublev next.
