Indian Wells Masters: Monfils fights back to beat Norrie and make last 16

Gael Monfils staged a remarkable comeback from a set and 3-0 down to defeat Cameron Norrie 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-3 and move into the last 16 at Indian Wells.

The Briton had edged a close first set on a tiebreak, before moving into a 3-0 lead in the second to gain a commanding grip on the match.

But Monfils fought back to take the second on another tiebreak before using the momentum to take the third in more comfortable fashion.

Monfils, ranked No 54, will play the winner of the match between Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 9 seed, and Frenchman Arthur Fils next.

The 37-year-old Frenchman beat Australian Max Purcell (6-1, 6-2) and Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 8 seed (6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-2) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round of the Indian Wells Tennis Masters, Norrie, ranked No 28, defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonego (6-4, 6-4).
