It’s been a tough six months for Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman on the pro tour. The 30-year-old former top 10 player ended 2022 with a seven match losing streak. His start to 2023 has not been good either. Schwartzman has won just one match in four tournaments this year – with his latest loss coming on Wednesday in front of his home fans in Buenos Aires – a lacklustre 6-1, 6-3 defeat to Bernabe Zapata Miralles.

The loss of form and confidence has been hard for Schwartzman and his fans and the Argentine, currently ranked No 32 in the world, says he is finding the piling losses hard to explain.

“It’s hard to find an explanation, It’s a shame, for all the people who came and tried to cheer me up in one way or another, and at all times. Both here and in Córdoba, the two weeks, the people cheering for me was spectacular. But I didn’t give them anything back. One wants to return a little of that form, to be more competitive. But the truth is that today the level is very low, and I cannot be competitive, neither with the help of the people, nor with some error of the rival. That’s the reality, I have to lose matches that maybe before I won with this score and today, I lose them in this way. And I’m having a hard time finding any explanation, and that’s also where the uncertainty I’m playing with comes from,” Schwartzman said after his latest defeat according to La Nacion.

On the one hand, it is a challenge; On the other hand, it is complicated, because I do not know how to face the competition

“My level is well below what I can play, and the opponents who come to these tournaments are very good. And at the level I’m playing, I lose. Unfortunately, I’m losing with scores that deepen the bad feelings. It’s hard. Today I’m standing at place where I don’t know where to go.”

Schwartzman adds that this has been a new situation for him but remains hopeful that he will find a way out.

“It never happened to me. On the one hand, it is a challenge; On the other hand, it is complicated, because I do not know how to face the tournaments, the competition. It’s the reality. I’m still in a good position in the rankings, but this for me is a new moment. It is clear that I am not facing it in the best way, in something I am wrong, hopefully I can find the reason for this situation.” he added.
