Japan Open: Popyrin books spot in last eight, back from a set and a break down v Garin

Australian Alexei Popyrin beat Chilean qualifier Cristian Garin 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-2 to advance to the last eight of the Japan Open at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on Thursday night.

Popyrin, ranked No 41, will play the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the top seed, and Japanese wildcard Shintaro Mochizuki next.

The Australian won against Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 7 seed (6-4, 6-2) in the previous round of the Tokyo Open.

In the previous round of the Tokyo Open, Garin, ranked No 94, defeated Japanese wildcard Sho Shimabukuro (6-4, 3-6, 6-3).
