Los Cabos Open: Kovacevic beats Rublev and sets up a final against Shapovalov
Aleksandar Kovacevic edged out Andrey Rublev 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday night and will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 3 seed, for the title

American Aleksandar Kovacevic, the No. 7 seed, advanced to the final of the Los Cabos Open by edging out Russian Andrey Rublev, the top seed, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the Cabo del Mar Sports Center on Saturday. This marks the second time this season that Kovacevic has defeated Rublev, having previously beaten him in the semi-finals in Montpellier (7-5, 6-4).
Kovacevic has now equaled the biggest win of his career (improving to 2-6 against Top 10 opponents) and reached his second ATP Tour final. He also becomes the fourth American to reach the final in Los Cabos, following Sam Querrey (2017), Taylor Fritz (2019), and Brandon Nakashima (2021).
Currently ranked No. 76, Kovacevic will face Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No. 3 seed, in the final. This is the first time since April 2025 that Kovacevic has won two consecutive main draw matches, with the previous instance dating back to the Houston tournament.
Commanding Shapovalov
Shapovalov secured his place in the final with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory over Australian Adam Walton, the No. 8 seed. The Canadian has been in dominant form all week, conceding only a handful of games. He previously defeated Tristan Schoolkate (6-3, 6-2) and American qualifier Govind Nanda (6-1, 6-2). This was Walton’s first ATP-level semi-final.
Shapovalov has now reached his ninth ATP Tour final (3-5 prior to Los Cabos), and his third outdoors, following Geneva 2021 (clay) and Seoul 2022 (hard). As noted by the ATP media service, after winning the Dallas title in February, Shapovalov joins Félix Auger-Aliassime (3), Jack Draper (2), and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (2) as the only players to reach multiple ATP Tour hard-court finals this season before the US summer leading up to the US Open.
