Madrid Masters: Fritz downs Hurkacz to reach last eight

American Taylor Fritz, the No 12 seed, advanced to the last 8 of the Madrid Masters by winning against Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 8 seed, 7-6 (2), 6-4 at the Caja Magica on Tuesday.

Fritz, ranked No 13, will play the winner of the match between Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 21 seed, and German Alexander Zverev, the No 4 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the American defeated Italian Luciano Darderi (7-6 (1), 6-4) and Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 18 seed (6-2, 6-3).

Hurkacz, ranked No 9, won against Jack Draper (6-1, 7-5) and German Daniel Altmaier (6-4, 7-6 (2)) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
