Madrid Masters: Fritz makes last 16 as Bonzi retires injured

American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Madrid Masters when Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi retired on Sunday evening at the Caja Mágica.

Fritz, ranked No 4, led 4-6, 7-5 when Bonzi, ranked No 62, pulled out at the Caja Mágica on Sunday evening.

The Frenchman called the physio towards the end of the second set, with what appeared to be a lower back injury, before being forced to withdraw after returning and losing that second set.

The American will play the winner of the match between American Sebastian Korda, the No 23 seed, and Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 14 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, Taylor Fritz won against Australian Christopher O’Connell (6-1, 6-4).

The Frenchman defeated Croat wildcard Marin Cilic (6-3, 6-2) and Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 27 seed (6-4, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
