Madrid: Qualifier Karatsev upsets Medvedev to reach first Masters 1000 quarter-final

Qualifier Aslan Karatsev reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters by defeating second seed Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (1), 6-4 at the Caja Magica on Tuesday.

Karatsev, ranked No 121, will play the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz, the No 8 seed, and Chinese Zhizhen Zhang next.

Ahead of his victory, Aslan Karatsev won against Serb Laslo Djere (7-6 (5), 7-5), Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, the No 23 seed (6-2, 7-5) and Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 16 seed (6-3, 4-6, 6-4).

Medvedev, ranked No 3, won against Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori (6-4, 6-3) and edged out qualifier Alexander Shevchenko (4-6, 6-1, 7-5) in the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament.
