Frenchman Alexandre Muller moved into the second round of the Madrid Masters when Belgian David Goffin retired at the Caja Mágica on Thursday.
Muller, ranked No 39, led 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 when Goffin, ranked No 49, pulled out at the Caja Mágica on Thursday.
The Frenchman will play No 21 seed Ugo Humbert next.
