Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 14 seed, advanced to the last 16 of the Madrid Masters by winning against American Sebastian Korda, the No 23 seed, 6-3, 6-3 at the Caja Mágica.
Ruud, ranked No 15, will play American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the Norwegian defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech (6-3, 6-4).
Korda, ranked No 24, won against Italian wildcard Federico Cina (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
