Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 4 seed, won against Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 25 seed, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the last 16 of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Magica on Monday evening.
Tsitsipas, ranked No 5, will play Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles next.
The Greek edged out Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem (3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5)) in the previous round.
