Hamad Medjedovic moved into the final of the Marseille Open by beating Russian Daniil Medvedev, the top seed, 6-3, 6-2 at the Palais des sports.
“I think I played my best tennis of the week,” said the 21-year-old Serb during the on-court interview. “I’m really happy. I applied my tactics, I put in a great performance.”
Medjedovic has earned his first victory against a member of the top 10, on his second attempt. The first came at Rome last year, where he lost 7-6, 2-6, 7-5 against the same opponent.
Medjedovic, ranked No 96, will face Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the second seed, next.
Ahead of his victory, the 21-year-old Serb won against Belgian Raphael Collignon (6-3, 6-4), Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 3 seed (6-2, 6-3) and German Daniel Altmaier (7-5, 6-7 (7), 6-4).
Medvedev, ranked No 8, defeated French qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert (6-2, 6-4) and German Jan-Lennard Struff (6-3, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
