Miami Masters: Goffin turns back the clock to stun Alcaraz
The Belgian will play American Brandon Nakashima, the No 31 seed, in the next round

Belgian veteran David Goffin put in one of his best performances in recent times to upset Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 and move into the third round of the Miami Masters on Friday evening.
Goffin began the match with a break in the first set before Alcaraz broke twice to take it 7-5. In the seconf set, the Belgian broke in the ninth game and served out the set to force a decider. Goffin broke early in the third amid a five-game winning streak to go up 2-0 and then broke the Spaniard again in the ninth game to close out the win.
It was a third consecutive Top 3 win (and eighth overall) for the Belgian, who also defeated Alcaraz (then world No 1) at Astana in 2022 and Alexander Zverev (then world no 3) at ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai last October.
Goffin, ranked No 55, will play American Brandon Nakashima, the No 31 seed, next at the Hard Rock Stadium. He is now through to the third round in Miami for the first time since 2019.
Ahead of his win today, the 34-year-old Belgian won against Australian Aleksandar Vukic (2-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Alcaraz’s record now stands at 15-4 for the season, highlighted by a title in Rotterdam and a semi-final in Indian Wells.
