Medvedev rips past Carballes Baena, into Miami’s third round

A self-described (albeit jokingly) hard-court specialist, Daniil Medvedev continues to shine on the gritty hard courts of North American – be they hard or be they slow. On Saturday the No 4 seed took the fast track to victory on a faster surface as he flew past Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1, 6-2 to reach the third round of the Miami Masters at the Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday night.

“Happy with my first match,” Medvedev said. “Solid performance and looking forward to my next matches.”

Medvedev, who improved to a tidy 25-3 on the season with his victory, will face Slovak Alex Molcan for the first time in the third round.

Medvedev dropped just 12 points on serve and saved the only break point he faced as he cracked 15 winners against 10 unforced errors to earn his tenth Miami Open win against four losses.

The two-time quarterfinalist has reached the final at all hard court Masters events except for Miami, but he’s well on his way after winning for the 20th time in his last 21 matches.

In the previous round of the Miami Open, Carballes Baena, ranked No 84, benefited from the abandonment of Bernabe Zapata Miralles (6-0, 3-0).
