Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 5 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Miami Masters by defeating Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, the No 30 seed, 6-4, 7-6 (4) at the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday.

Ruud needed an hour and 36 minutes to secure the win and he did it on the back of 11 aces, 33 winners and one break-point conversion.

“It was a really tough match,” Ruud told the media after the match. “Tabilo is taking a lot of great steps in the last couple of years and he has played big tennis on the big stage so he will be a tough player no matter where you play him.

“And tonight it was just a few points, especially in the second that decided it… one mini break in the tiebreak and that can be the difference. Lucky that went my way and yeah, I’m happy with my game. We both served well, wasn’t too many chances in the service games to break but I got one early break in the first set kept my cool all the way from there. Played aggressive when I had to so I’m happy with some shots that I made.”

Ruud, ranked No 6, will play the winner of the match between Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 23 seed, and American Tommy Paul, the No 12 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Miami Open, the Norwegian edged out Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (3-6, 6-4, 6-4).

Tabilo, ranked No 31, edged out Frenchman Corentin Moutet (5-7, 6-3, 7-5) in the second round of the Miami Open.
