Monte-Carlo Masters: Fils takes out Rublev to reach quarter-finals

Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 12 seed, won against Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 7 seed, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the last eight of the Monte-Carlo Masters at the Monte-Carlo Country Club on Thursday.

Fils, ranked No 15, will play the winner of the match between German qualifier Daniel Altmaier and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, next. He’s the only man to reach the last eight at the first three Masters 1000s this year.

“From A to Z I was very focused,” Fils told reporters, in French. “I made the right choices. I was implementing my tactics. I was feeling good. This was a really good match.”

The 20-year-old Frenchman beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2) and Italian Flavio Cobolli (6-2, 6-4) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round of the Monte-Carlo tournament, Rublev, ranked No 9, defeated Frenchman Gael Monfils (6-4, 7-6 (2)).
