Monte-Carlo: First Masters 1000 match win since 2021 for terrific Thiem, through to second round

Austrian wildcard Dominic Thiem advanced to the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters by beating Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-4 at Monte-Carlo Country Club on Monday.

It was his first win at a Masters 1000 event since beating Marton Fucsovics in Rome back in 2021 – a five-match losing streak, as he suffered an injury to his right wrist one month later.

Thiem, ranked No 111, will face No 6 seed Holger Rune next.
