Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No 30 seed, moved into the third round of the Madrid Masters by winning against American Marcos Giron 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6), 6-1 at the Caja Mágica.
Berrettini, ranked No 31, will face No 5 seed Jack Draper next.
Giron, ranked No 45, edged out Learner Tien (6-1, 1-6, 7-6 (4)) in the previous round of the Madrid tournament.
