Paul wins epic all American final to claim Dallas Open title

Second seed Tommy Paul defeated Marcos Giron 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-3 to win the Dallas Open trophy at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on Sunday evening.

The title is Paul’s second Tour-level trophy, with the American having won his maiden title at the Stockholm Open in 2021. The win also sees Paul move closer to his career-high of No 12, with the 26-year-old returning to No 14 in the world this Monday.

“That was a pretty unbelievable match,” Paul said after winning the Dallas Open final over Giron. “Best final I’ve ever played.”

In what was the first all American final since the Tokyo Open in 2021, both men played excellent tennis across the opening two sets. With 16 winners and just one unforced error in the first set, Paul drew first blood in the final, but Giron wasn’t goign to be left behind, with the 30-year-old leveling the match at a set apiece when he won the second set 7-5.

However, an early break from Paul in the deciding set was all it took for the world No 15 to get his nose in front, with Paul hanging on and sealing the victory in two hours, 33 minutes.

Paul, ranked No 15, beat Japanese Taro Daniel (6-3, 6-2), German Dominik Koepfer, the No 8 seed (7-5, 6-3) and No 3 seed Ben Shelton (6-2, 6-4) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of the Dallas tournament, Giron, ranked No 67, defeated qualifier Nicolas Moreno De Alboran (6-1, 6-4), Australian Max Purcell, the No 6 seed (6-4, 6-3), top seed Frances Tiafoe (6-1, 6-4) and Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 4 seed (6-1, 6-3).
