Qatar Open: Medvedev holds off O’Connell challenge, advances to semi-finals

Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, edged out Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to move into the last 4 of the Qatar Open at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Thursday.

Medvedev, ranked No 8, will play the winner of the match between Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 7 seed, and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the second seed, next.

Medvedev is into his 41st tour-level semi-final – his third of the year so far after Adelaide in January and Rotterdam earlier this month.

The Russian won against qualifier Liam Broady (6-4, 6-3) ahead of his victory.

Earlier in the tournament, O’Connell, ranked No 94, beat Spanish wildcard Fernando Verdasco (6-1, 3-6, 6-0) and edged out Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, the No 5 seed (3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4).
