“This was an accident – I am fine” – Djokovic allays fans’ fears after bottle incident in Rome
Novak Djokovic told fans he was not injured after a freak accident in Rome
Novak Djokovic was quick to take to social media and post a message confirming he is unharmed following a bizarre accident at the Rome Masters on Friday.
Following his straight-sets win over Corentin Moutet, the world No 1 was signing autographs for fans when he was struck on the head by a bottle and fell to the ground.
Many were concerned that it had been a deliberate action, but footage swiftly confirmed that the bottle had been in a fan’s backpack, and as he reached down to shake Djokovic’s hand, it slipped out.
Officials rushed to Djokovic’s side and the tournament issued a statement that he had been given “appropriate medication”.
Then the 36-year-old said on X (formerly Twitter): “Thank you for the messages of concern. This was an accident and I am fine resting at the hotel with an ice pack. See you all on Sunday.”
