Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 8 seed, reached the last 16 of the Rome Masters by defeating Russian lucky loser Alexander Shevchenko 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2 at the Foro Italico on Sunday evening.

Sinner, ranked No 8, will face Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 24 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Italian Open, the 21-year-old Italian won against Australian qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis (6-1, 6-4). Shevchenko, ranked No 93, beat Argentinian Sebastian Baez (6-3, 6-4).
