Shanghai Masters: Impressive Shelton fights back to oust in-form Safiullin and make last 16

American Ben Shelton, the No 19 seed, edged out Russian Roman Safiullin 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to move into the last 16 of the Shanghai Masters at the Qi Zhong Stadium.

Shelton, ranked No 20, will play the winner of the match between Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 6 seed, and Argentinian Sebastian Baez, the No 25 seed, next.

In the previous round of the Shanghai tournament, the 20-year-old American won against Spaniard Jaume Munar (6-4, 6-4).

Safiullin, ranked No 50, beat Andy Murray (6-3, 6-2) and German Alexander Zverev, the No 9 seed (6-3, 6-1) earlier in the tournament.
