Shelton battles past Cerundolo to make Munich final

American Ben Shelton, the second seed, edged out Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, the No 5 seed, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 to reach the final of the Munich Open at the MTTC Iphitos complex on Saturday afternoon.

Shelton, ranked No 15, will face the winner of the match between German Alexander Zverev, the top seed, and Hungarian Fabian Marozsan next. He’s the first Amrican to make an ATP 500 final on clay since 2009, when the category began.

The 22-year-old American won against Croat qualifier Borna Gojo (4-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3)), Dutch lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp (7-6 (1), 6-3) and Italian Luciano Darderi (6-4, 6-3) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of the Munich tournament, Cerundolo, ranked No 22, beat German Jan-Lennard Struff (6-0, 6-2), Kazakh lucky loser Alexander Shevchenko (6-3, 6-2) and Belgian David Goffin (6-2, 6-4).
