American Alex Michelsen, the No 7 seed, beat Frenchman Gael Monfils 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the second round of the Stuttgart Open at Tennisclub Weissenhof Stuttgart on Tuesday evening.
Michelsen, ranked No 35, will play German wildcard Justin Engel next.
