The good vibes continue to flow for American Tommy Paul in the United States. Last week’s title winner at the Dallas Open moved into the semi-finals at Delray Beach with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Australia’s Jordan Thompson.

Paul stretches his current winning streak to six victories with the win, which took one hour and 31 minutes to achieve in windy, warm conditions.

Paul moves into his tenth career ATP semi-final and will face the winner of the match between Italian lucky loser Flavio Cobolli and American Frances Tiafoe, the second seed, next. The 26-year-old improves to 9-2 on the season, while Thompson drops to 8-5.

Not as simple as the scoreline suggests

Paul broke early in both sets, but he had trouble closing out the opener. Thompson saved three set points while serving at 2-5, then held his serve and broke Paul to get back on serve.

But Paul broke at 30 to claim the set, 6-4.

In the second Thompson was pesky again, breaking back for 1-2, but he couldn’t hold in the next game. Paul broke for 3-1 and didn’t face a break point the rest of the way, he converted his second match point to close out the victory and notch his second Delray Beach semi-final appearance.

“I thought I kept it cool on court today, and held my own on my serve, I think that was really important,” Paul said.

Ahead of his victory, the American edged out Alex Michelsen (5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4)).

Thompson, ranked No 42, won against No 7 seed Daniel Evans (7-5, 6-0) and American qualifier Nicolas Moreno De Alboran (6-2, 6-2) in the previous rounds of the Delray Beach tournament.
