Davidovich Fokina slides past Zverev and into last 16 at

Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina advanced to the last 16 of the Toronto Masters by beating German Alexander Zverev, the No 13 seed, 6-1, 6-2 at the Aviva Centre on Wednesday evening.

The Spaniard had never won a match at the National Bank Open prior to this year, but now he is into the round of 16 after dropping just five games through two rounds.

He entered the day with a 0-3 record against Zverev but quickly realised that Wednesday could be his day.

“I didn’t win a set against Zverev but when I won the first set I was like ‘Oh wow, I can beat this guy,'” he said. “He wasn’t feeling very good, doing a lot of mistakes in the beginning and I was improving every game.

“I was enjoying the court with the crowd, it was full – I was very happy.”

Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 37, will play Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 3 seed, next.

Ahead of his victory, the Spaniard won against American J.J. Wolf (6-0, 6-2).

Zverev, ranked No 16, defeated Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor (6-4, 7-6 (3)) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.
