Toronto Masters: Rublev reaches last eight after Davidovich Fokina’s retirement

Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 6 seed, advanced to the last eight of the Toronto Masters when Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 20 seed, retired at the Aviva Centre on Sunday evening.

Rublev, ranked No 11, led 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 3-0 when Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 26, pulled out, probably harrassed bu two weeks of intense tennis after his final at Washington one week ago.

The Russian will face the winner of the match between Czech Jiri Lehecka, the No 19 seed, and American Taylor Fritz, the second seed, next.

The Spaniard won against Czech Jakub Mensik, the No 12 seed (6-2, 6-4) and Frenchman Corentin Moutet (6-4, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Rogers Cup.
