Toronto Masters: Zverev into quarter-finals after Cerundolo’s retirement
Alexander Zverev benefited from the abandonment of Francisco Cerundolo (6-4, 1-0) on Sunday night. He’ll face Australian Alexei Popyrin, the No 18 seed, in the next round

Top seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals of the National Bank Open in Toronto after Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo retired due to what looks like an abdominal injury. At the Aviva Centre, Zverev, ranked No. 3, led 6-4, 1-0 when Cerúndolo, the No. 14 seed, withdrew following difficulties with his serve and visible discomfort.
Zverev will meet the defending champion, Australia’s Alexei Popyrin (No. 18 seed), in the next round. Popyrin reached the last eight after staging a comeback win over Denmark’s Holger Rune, the No. 5 seed, with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Alexander Zverev, who’s playing his first event since his first round loss at Wimbledon, defeated Italian Matteo Arnaldi, the No 32 seed (6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2) and Australian Adam Walton (7-6 (6), 6-4) ahead of his victory.
