Finn Emil Ruusuvuori defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-2, 6-3 to reach the second round of the Vienna Open at the Wiener Stadthalle on Tuesday.
Ruusuvuori, ranked No 43, will play the winner of the match between Pole Hubert Hurkacz, the No 5 seed, and American Frances Tiafoe next.
Sonego enjoyed one of the best weeks of his career in Vienna in 2022, defeating Hubert Hurkacz, Novak Djokovic and Dan Evans in succession to reach his biggest career final. But he had no answers against the 23-year-old Finn on Tuesday.
Ruusuvuori, a semi-finalist at Stockholm last week, hit 19 winners against 10 unforced errors and saved the only break point he faced while converting four of five break points against the Italian. He improves to 35-28 on the season.
