Vienna Open: Sinner sets up fourth final against Medvedev in 2023

Italian Jannik Sinner, the second seed, reached the final of the Vienna Open by beating Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 3 seed, 7-5, 7-6 (5) at the Wiener Stadthalle on Saturday.

Sinner, ranked No 4, will play Russian Daniil Medvedev, the top seed, next. Sinner’s 55th win of the year also set a new record for any Italian in a single season.

“It was a roller-coaster,” admitted Sinner, who served for the match at 5-4 in the second but was broken and had to gather himself again in the tiebreak. I tried to stay calm but it was tough. But I’m glad I was able to find a solution.”

Ahead of his victory, the 22-year-old Italian won against American Ben Shelton (7-6 (2), 7-5), lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego (6-2, 6-4) and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 7 seed (6-3, 6-4).

Rublev, ranked No 5, won against Australian Alexei Popyrin (7-6 (5), 6-4), Italian Matteo Arnaldi (7-5, 6-3) and German Alexander Zverev, the No 5 seed (6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3) earlier in the tournament.
